I am not one for high fashion. I work from home and dress for comfort (to me, that’s t-shirts and jeans). A few years ago, a friend started telling me about Stitch Fix. I had heard about it online but didn’t really know too much about it. After reading more about it I decided to give it a try.
- What StitchFix is -
Stitch Fix is a personal stylist service. They pick out five items for you to try at home and then you keep what you want and send back the rest (shipping is free both ways). You now have the option to preview several items and give your stylist feedback – you can choose up to five items from the preview to receive in your fix (or 0 if you don’t like any and your stylist will choose again). You are charged a $20 styling fee when they ship your order, but that is applied as a credit when you purchase something from that order. I preferred to get a “Style Pass” where I paid a $49 fee up front for a year of unlimited styling instead of $20 right before each fix.
StitchFix offers a constantly changing of clothes & accessories from 1,000+ brands (and exclusive Stitch Fix labels) in regular and extended sizes, including: Women, Petite, Plus, Maternity, Kids, Men and Big & Tall. So far I've tried both Women's and Maternity clothing. Jason's tried StitchFix Men and wasn't impressed ;) I've been on the fence about kids clothing for Brinley & Caleb but haven't tried it out yet.
After signing up for StitchFix, I downloaded the app to my phone. From there, I decided how often I wanted to receive a fix. You can get a box automatically every month or every other month, or you can manually choose how often you would like to get a box (on demand fixes). There is no minimum, so if you decide you don’t like it after one box, you don’t have to get more.
The next step is to take your style quiz (It's quick and painless). You give them your measurements and tell them how you prefer your clothes to fit. Do you have features you want to show off or downplay? Let them know. Under the style sections, you will see different choices of clothes and you rate how you like each style. You also tell them what occasions you need clothes for (work, casual, special events, date night or a night out), what styles and accessories you want to include, and what items or colors you want to avoid. The next section goes over the price range that you prefer for each category. I am not one that likes to spend a lot on clothes, so my items are either $50-100 or the cheaper, the better.
The final section has a few about you questions and has a spot to link to your social media profiles (Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest). This gives your Stylist more info on your likes and dislikes (especially Pinterest!).
- What to Expect With Your First Fix -
If you didn’t pre-select all 5 items through the preview, getting a fix can feel like opening a Christmas present! At the top, you will find a note from your stylist and a style sheet showing you how to combine different items. There is also a price list. If you purchase all 5 items, you receive a 25% discount.
Here you'll note the 25% discount but not the $20 credit from styling fee since I'm a style pass member and paid up front, I've already applied that credit to my first order under my Style pass.
Here's an older example (before I had the Style Pass) that shows the 25% discount, and the $20 styling fee credit.
The fun part comes next – trying on each piece and deciding if you want to keep it or return it. You have 3 days to decide what you want to keep before you need to send items back. When you are ready to check out, go into your Stitch Fix App and click on check out. It will show you each item. Click whether you are keeping or returning the item and then fill out what you liked or didn’t like about the item. Giving your stylist feedback helps them get to know you and your style better. A priority envelope is included with your fix, so just place the items you want to return inside, and place it in a mailbox.
- What I Like About StitchFix -
For me, the best part is having someone else pick out items that might look good on me. I have received items that I probably wouldn’t have picked for myself at a store, but I have liked once I tried it on. The convenience of not having to go shopping and try things on at the store is well worth it for me! I can try clothes on and see how it works with other items that I own. And finally, every pair of jeans that I have tried on from Stitch Fix has been SO comfortable. Also, now you can shop by category without waiting for a fix or paying a styling fee.
- What I Wish Stitch Fix did better -
For me, predictability with deliveries is important. After COVID, I've found that (like so many other companies) they haven't always been able to get me my fixes by the forecasted delivery date. It's worth noting that they DO make a point to call out that the delivery date is estimated and not guaranteed. I completely understand that supply issues, staffing availability, and USPS have all contributed to this over the last year (so I don't fault Stitch Fix). I also with they would apply a 25% discount if I purchase 5 or more items from the online shop (non-fix orders). Other than that, I've really enjoyed by 2020/2021 fixes so far.
